Texas Hold’em – Some Interesting Odds to Consider

Your Two hole Cards

Your two hole cards dealt

Odds Against

Percent Chance

Chance of getting a specific pair
(such as aces):

220 to 1

Less then 1 %
(0.45 % )

Chance of getting ANY pair:

16 to 1

  6.25 %

Chance of getting AK suited:

331 to 1

Less then 1 %
(0.30 % )

Chance of getting AK unsuited:

110 to 1

Less then 1 %
(0.91 %)

Chance that any one person will be dealt an ACE (10 players):

Chance of a starting hand with a pair or no card lower than a ten

4.4 to 1

               22.72 %

Chance of a starting hand with a pair or no card lower than a queen

20 to 1

                 5 %

For the Flop (first 3 cards dealt up)

Hand with first 3 card flop

Odds Against

Percent Chance

Chance an ACE with the flop (if one person already has an Ace). Watch for this!

6 to 1

16.66 %

Chance of Flopping a set if you start with a pocket pair:

8 to 1

12.5 %

Odds of flopping a flush if you hold two suited cards:

20 to 1

5 %

Chance of flopping one pair if do not have before flop

2.1 to 1

47.62 %

Keep in mind that flopping a small pair is not usually a good situation and will typically cost you more bets than you will make in the long run.  Ideally you want to flop top pair and have a good kicker to play the hand with confidence.

After the Flop with TWO more cards to come

Cards you have after three card flop

 What you need

Odds against making hand

Percent chance against making hand

Four suited Cards

One more Suited Card to make a flush

1.9 to 1

52.63 %

Three suited cards

Two more cards of same suit you require

4.2 to 1

23.80 %

Open end straight draw

One of the two end cards to make the straight

2.2 to 1

45.45 %

Inside Straight draw

The one card that fits inside to make the straight

5 to 1

20 %

As we can see from the odds above, if you have four cards to a flush or an open-ended straight draw, the odds are approximately 2 to 1 you will not get the card you need to complete your hand.  However, if the odds are 2 to 1 and the pot is giving you 10 to 1 odds from the size of the bet, you should definitely call to see the last two cards. By knowing the odds of making a hand compared to the pot size you have a better chance of being a big winner in the game of poker.
